Basic Union Apprenticeship Requirements

Be at least 18 years old.
- Most programs require applicants to be 18 or older. If you’ve reached adulthood, you’ve cleared this hurdle.
Have a high school diploma or GED.
- A high school education or equivalent is typically required. Many unions want to ensure you have basic math and reading skills.
Possess a valid driver’s license.
- While not always mandatory for every trade, having a driver’s license is a common requirement.
Pass a drug test.
- A clean drug test is crucial. If you’re currently using, stop before applying. Many unions have zero tolerance policies.

Examples of Specific Requirements

IBEW Electrician Apprenticeship:
- Age: 18+
- High school diploma or GED
- Algebra proficiency
- Pass the IBEW aptitude test
Ironworker Apprenticeship:
- Age: 18+
- High school diploma or GED
- Good physical condition (strength and balance required)
Lineworker Apprenticeship (IBEW):
- Age: 18+
- High school diploma or GED
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
- Be able to pass IBEW aptititude test
Sheet Metal Apprenticeship:
- Age: 18+
- High school diploma or GED
- Dependable transportation

How Much Do Apprentices Make?

Union apprentices earn while they learn. Depending on the union contract and location, apprentice pay varies throughout the country. Apprenticeships typically have a 1st, 2nd,& 3rd year or steps/periods 1-7, where you get paid more, as you get further along in the apprenticeship. Typically it’s based on a percentage of journeyman rate. It also depends on what trade. Some trades makes more than others. For example, linemen apprentices, typically make more than a carpenter apprentice. Here are average starting salaries based on union data:

Electricians: Starting out $18 to $25 per hour. Journeymen making over $100k annually, depending on location & job.
Ironworkers: $19 to $24 per hour starting out. Experienced ironworkers making over 6 figures a year. Plus awesome benefits!
Plumbers and Pipefitters: Starting pay; $18 to $26 per hour. Depending on job & location, they can make upwards to $200k a year!
Elevator Technicians: Beginners make $25 to $30 per hour. Elevator techs make the dough. Experienced journeyman mechanics making well into $200k a year
Operating Engineers: $22 to $27 per hour; starting pay. Operators around the country, depending on job/hours can make well over $100,000 a year! Plus union benefits.
