Knot Tying – Square Knot

A square knot is a type of knot used to join two ropes of equal thickness. It is a simple, sturdy, and reliable knot that is easy to tie and untie. Another knot used in many applications in the lineman trade.

The basic formula for tying a square knot is: right over left, left over right!

The knot should be symmetrical and lay flat without any twists or turns. A properly tied square knot will hold firmly under tension and can be untied easily by pulling on the loose ends of the ropes. Improperly tied is called a “granny knot”.
