Learn How To Tie a Cow Hitch

Cow Hitch: Beginners Guide

A cow hitch (also called a lanyard hitch or girth hitch) is a simple knot used to attach a rope to an object. It’s commonly used in rigging, climbing, and securing loads. The knot is easy to tie and untie, making it useful for quick connections.

How to Tie a Cow Hitch:

  1. Wrap the rope around the object (pole, post, or ring).
  2. Bring the working end under the standing part of the rope.
  3. Pull the working end through the loop you just created.
  4. Tighten the knot by pulling both ends.

This hitch is similar to a clove hitch but offers a more secure hold, especially when used with an extra half hitch for reinforcement. It’s often used in lineman work for securing handlines or tool bags to poles.
