Is It Hard To Become An HVAC Technician?

Are you interested in becoming an HVAC technician? My name is Jared Moore and I work as a technician and install coordinator for First Choice Mechanical. I stumbled into this trade as my first job out of high school. A family friend had left to go into the military and then came back to it because it’s a great career.

Why did I want to get into this trade? There are a lot of opportunities in this field. You don’t need a lot of schooling to get started and there’s room for growth and movement. It’s not a boring job where you stay in one spot all day. You get to walk around, meet new people and do your thing.

The most rewarding part of this job is helping people. In Arizona, where it’s hot, not having air conditioning can be a serious problem. Being able to fix the problem quickly and leave with a smile on their face is very satisfying. The hardest part of getting into this trade is developing your people skills. The mechanical side is easy to learn, but being able to talk to people and not be shy is important.

I personally got started in this trade by going to a local HVAC company. They didn’t require me to have schooling to start. I worked as a helper and then went to school. If you’re interested in getting started in this trade, I recommend finding a local HVAC company and seeing if you like it. There are lots of positions for helpers and you can go to school later.
